Kraft Trial Delayed Indefinitely

On Tuesday, a judge granted a state attorney’s request to put a possible trial for Robert Kraft on hold while prosecutors appeal a decision that threw out evidence against Kraft, who owns the NFL’s New England Patriots and resides in Palm Beach part time. The story was first reported by the Palm Beach Daily News.

The evidence that was thrown out includes two videos that police say show Kraft paying for sex acts during two visits to the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter in January. County judge Leonard Hanser ruled to suppress the videos and other evidence gained during a “sneak and peek” search warrant. Now, prosecutors are seeking to have his decision overturned.

Hanser agreed on Tuesday to allow the case to go through the appeals process before it proceeds to trial. According to the states motion, adjudicating the case now without the recently suppressed evidence is “contrary to the interests of justice.”

The state’s case is expected to be heard by the Fourth District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach.

The stay order Hanser made on Tuesday puts Kraft’s case on hold indefinitely. The order could mean that the case won’t be resolved until after the 2019 NFL season officially begins on Sept. 5. Kraft’s Patriots will open their 2019 season in a Sept. 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Even if Kraft isn’t found guilty of a crime in the Jupiter case, he could still be subject to disciplinary action by the NFL under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Kraft is one of the 25 men charged with soliciting prostitution at the Orchids of Asia day spa, where the Jupiter police conducted a monthlong investigation and initially suspected links to human trafficking, although no one has been charged with trafficking. Kraft has pleaded not guilty.
