Flag Display to Be Held in Palm Beach

One weekend this November, the town of Palm Beach’s Bradley Park will be awash in red, white, and blue, as first reported by the Palm Beach Daily News.

Earlier this month, the Town Council officially approved the Rotary Club of Palm Beach’s request to stage a U.S. flag display during Veterans Day weekend. The holiday weekend falls Nov. 8-11, 2019.

The display, featuring hundreds of flags, will be part of the town’s first Flags for Heroes charity event.

Donors will buy medallions, naming a veteran or another hero in their lives, for around $100 each. The medallions will then be hung on a flag where they will be displayed throughout the three-day event. At the end of the weekend the buyers will be able to take home the medallions.

Rotary Club of Palm Beach President, Richard Zaretsky, originally requested to hold the event in the Royal Poinciana Way medium. However, the council denied this request. The council cited concerns that the display could damage the $200,000 irrigation system in place in the median.

The 3-foot-by-5-foot flags are to be displayed on poles 8 to 10 feet tall which will be staked about a foot deep in the ground.

Since the irrigation system in the median isn’t mapped, the possibility of accidentally damaging the system was high, Public Works Director Paul Brazil said.

In April, Councilwoman Margaret Zeidman suggested that the display be held instead in Bradley Park. Bradley Park’s new irrigation system, installed in 2017, is precisely mapped. Brazil said that should not pose any problems.

The event request was formally approved at the May 14 council meeting.
